Championships: 1 (2003-04)
Founded in 1992, the Tampa Bay Lighting have won one Stanley Cup championship during their time in the NHL. The team is often referred to as the “Bolts”, which is currently used on their third team jersey.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are a team mixed with young, up and coming players, and experienced veterans. It is hard to predict what will happen to Tampa Bay this year under coach Jon Cooper. 3rd overall draft pick Jonathan Drouin will push for a top 6 spot with a potentially lethal pairing with top scorer Steven Stamkos. Veteran Martin St. Louis returns looking to continue where he left off last season. Young defensemen Victor Hedman will continue his growth into one of the best young defensemen in the league. Goaltenders Ben Bishop and Anders Lindback will share the time in goal until one of them separates themselves into a starting goaltender.
How to Play as the Lightning:
The Lightning have a tremendous offense centered around Stamkos, St. Louis, Drouin and Ryan Malone. Try to keep their top two lines on as much as possible to continue putting the pressure on the opposition’s defense. Be wary on the back end as the goaltending has been a constant issue in Tampa for many years now.
The Lightning mascot is a lightning bug named ThunderBug. He performs at games and makes appearances in the community. According to the Lightning website, his hobbies include “wrestling Florida Panthers, Shark fishing, hunting Ducks, trap shooting Thrashers and Carolina Hog tying”.
